Criminal Justice Bridge Course

Get credit for your recruit training! This course "bridges" the gap between topics presented in the basic recruit programs and classes on the same subjects that are offered in the Criminal Justice Technology Degree Program by requiring independent study, research, and writing components not included in the training programs.

Florida Emergency Medical Services CPR and ACLS Providers

Prerequisite(s): None

Corequisite(s): American Heart Association CPR / BLS Provider (or equivalent)

This lecture and laboratory course is based upon the US DOT First Responder National Standard Curriculum. This course provides training on how to use a minimal amount of equipment to render basic emergency medical care. Training includes how to perform the initial assessment and interventions, and how to assist other trained EMS providers. This course is ideal for lifeguards, scout leaders, bus drivers, law enforcement, and volunteer firefighters. This is an ideal course for those planning on taking emergency medical course work.

Emergency Vehicle Operator Course

The Emergency Vehicle Operator Course – EVOC (EMS1335) consist of sixteen contact hours that provides minimum EMS industry training that includes eight hours of didactic and eight hours of practical topics. The course is delivered to students at the Institute of Public Safety. Students that successfully complete both the didactic and practical components will receive a grade for the course and a Certification of Completion. Students taking this course are generally enrolled in the Emergency Medical Technician Certificate program. EVOC certification is not required for the EMT Certification, but it is required to be employed in a driving position that will operate emergency vehicles. This course meets the regulatory requirements for EVOC.

Didactic Topics:

  1. Legal aspects of authorized emergency vehicle operators.
  2. Selecting routes and reporting emergency operation.
  3. The practice of defensive driving.
  4. Accident avoidance.
  5. Principles of vehicle control.
  6. Routine safety checks of vehicle.

Practical Topics:

  1. Braking and control braking.
  2. Backing; road position, fender judgment and steering technique.
  3. Slalom; steering technique and chassis set.
  4. Steering technique during a skid; a skid pad is optional.
  5. Turn-around-steering technique; fender judgment, road position, controlled braking, controlled acceleration, understeer, oversteer and chassis set.
