Only trained Facilities personnel may attempt to repair electrical outlets, wires, circuitry, or appliances. If something seems dangerous, do not touch it! Contact Facilities, SFPD, and/or the Safety Coordinator immediately.

Appliances on Campus

The following electrical appliances are NOT allowed on any SF campus:

  • Space Heaters
  • Cup Warmers
  • Immersion Heaters
  • Hot Plates
  • Tabletop Grills / Panini Presses
  • Wax, Oil, Incense, or Potpourri Warmers / Burners

Individuals with such items in their work areas will be asked to remove them. Failure to do so may result in removal by Facilities Services.

The following are allowed ONLY in breakrooms, kitchens, and similar designated areas:

  • Electric Kettles
  • Electric Coffee/Tea Makers
  • Microwaves
  • Full-Size Refrigerators
  • Toasters and Toaster Ovens
  • Slow Cookers, Crock-Pots, Instant Pots

All electrical appliances on college premises must adhere to the following standards:

  • Conforms to National Electrical Code and Florida State Requirements for Educational Facilities
  • Certified by a nationally recognized testing lab
  • Has a cord with a grounding prong or polarized plug
  • Does not adversely affect electrical circuit loads
  • Located in an area suitable for its use and designed to accommodate it
  • Connected directly to an outlet (power strips and extension cords are prohibited)
  • Kept clean and free of dust, crumbs, or other hazardous materials
  • Never unattended while in use, and switched off when not in use (refrigerators excepted)

Appliances not adhering to college standards and policies will be removed.


Decorations and Lights

Any electrical decorations, including holiday lights, are required to adhere to the following regulations:

  • Must be connected directly to an outlet, or to a 3-pronged extension cord that is UL-rated and fitted with an internal circuit breaker
  • Must be in good repair with no missing bulbs, broken fixtures, frayed cords, etc.
  • Must not be hung within 24" of any flammable material, including the ceiling

Decorations which pose a safety risk may be removed by Safety Coordinator, Facilities Services, or the SFPD.
