Frequently Asked Questions
Encounters are 15–20 minutes long depending on how many questions you have for our zookeepers!
As long as the temperature is at least 65 degrees you will be able to offer the tortoises either chopped veggies or some of their favorite plants. Our tortoises have a choice to participate in the encounter and eat items that are offered.
Our tortoises are GIANT! They weigh well over 300lbs and are unable to be held. However, they are usually eager to meet people and at the direction of our zookeepers, you will be allowed to touch them if the tortoises are interested.
If you anticipate being late, please call the zoo main office at (352) 395-5633 as soon as possible. We cannot guarantee that zookeepers will be available to facilitate the encounter if you are beyond 15 minutes late. If you cannot make it all together, please let us know as soon as possible and we will do our best to reschedule.
We ask that all members of your tour wear closed toed shoes. The tortoises live behind-the-scenes and the path is uneven.
Tortoises get energy from the sun, so if it is below 65 degrees, the tortoises may prefer to warm up in their barn than come out to meet people. We will consider the projected forecast at the time of booking, but due to the unpredictable nature of Florida weather, there may need to be adjustments as it gets closer to your encounter date. If necessary, we will work with you to reschedule for a warmer day.
Thank you for your submission! You should receive a response from the scheduling staff within 72 hours. If you have not received a response after three business days, please call 352-395-5633 for assistance. If you are a potential student and have questions about the program, please email ZooAdvisor@sfcollege.edu.
