About TRIO

Federal TRIO Programs help students to overcome economic, social, academic and cultural barriers to higher education. Since the initiation of Upward Bound in the 1964 Economic Opportunity Act, Educational Talent Search in the 1965 Higher Education Act, and then Student Support Services in 1968, (these three programs collectively came to be known as TRIO), the federal government has provided funding to help low-income students reach for educational equity and enter college. Congress mandates that two-thirds of TRIO students must come from families with incomes no greater than 150% of federal poverty levels and in which neither parent has a bachelor’s degree.

Santa Fe College has hosted TRIO programs for over 30 years with Educational Talent Search, Upward Bound, Student Support Services (SSS) Classic, SSS STEM and SSS Veterans. In this time, we have served over 25,000 students.
