CHIPOLA ENDS SAINTS SEASON (FCSAA TOURNAMENT)
Lakeland, FL – The Saints saw a left handed starting pitcher again on Tuesday and for the fourth game in a row, failed to get much going offensively. SF managed just two hits all game and fell to Chipola College 8-0 in a FCSAA State Tournament elimination game.
Santa Fe starting pitcher Chris Lee (4-1) kept the Saints in the game for five innings, allowing just three runs on six hits. Jarrod Carlton kept the score close with two innings of relief, but a late five run rally cut the game and the Saints season short.
Already ahead 3-0 going into the bottom of the eighth, the Indians scored five times to put the game away and move on to face either Polk State College or Northwest Florida State, the only other two teams remaining
Despite the loss, the Saints finished 2011 with the most wins in school history (37) and their third straight Mid-Florida Conference Championship, something Coach Johnny Wiggs says the team should be proud of.
“This loss stings a lot right now, but I think when we look back on this season in its entirety it was a really good year, one of the best in Santa Fe history,” said Wiggs. “I’m proud of our guys and how they competed all season long. This program is in a really good place and we plan on continuing to compete for championships for years to come.”
