ASHER PITCHES PAST BROWARD, 7-2 (FCSAA TOURNAMENT)
Lakeland, FL – Facing elimination for the second day in a row, the Saints received stellar pitching from Alec Asher and Kyle Rowe and some timely Broward errors in the sixth inning to help them move on in the FCSAA Tournament. They will face the loser of the Chipola and Northwest Florida game Tuesday at 1:00 PM.
Asher pitched six innings, surrendering just two runs, both of them unearned while striking out five. Kyle Rowe finished the game out with three solid innings of work, hold the Seahawks scoreless.
“Alec and Kyle did a real nice job today,” said Coach Johnny Wiggs. “They kept us in the game and gave us a chance to win it.”
Santa Fe got on the board first, scoring one run in the first on an RBI double by Drew Doty, scoring Austin Lawrence. Broward answered in the second, scoring an unearned run on an RBI single by Cater Bumgardner.
The Seahawks took the lead in the fifth inning but SF bounced right back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI sacrifice fly by Doty, his second RBI of the game.
The Saints blew the game open in the sixth thanks to a series of miscues by BC. Jake Huxtable led off with a walk and Zach Taylor followed with a single past first base. Tim Remes laid down a perfect sac bunt to move both runners up a base into scoring position.
It looked like the Saints may come away empty handed again after Andrew Grifol struck out for the second out of the inning, but two Broward errors brought four SF runs home.
Cory Elasik hit a ground ball to short stop with the bases loaded and the Seahawks first baseman failed to handle the throw cleanly, resulting in the go ahead run. The next batter, Drew Doty, sent a deep fly ball to right field and the outfielder dropped the ball as he hit the fence, clearing the bases for a 6-2 SF lead.
Lawrence gave Santa Fe an insurance run in the eighth when he doubled hom Andrew Grifol.
Rowe closed out the game in the ninth by inducing a ground ball double play to Elasik at third.
Lawrence finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Zach Taylor was 2-for-4.
The Saints move on in the double elimination tournament to face the loser of the Chipola and Northwest Florida game at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, May 10. The contest can be heard live on Sports Radio 850 AM WRUF and watched live on www.psblive.com.
