Steinway Piano Resides in Its Own Room at the New Fine Arts Hall

April 5, 2011

We all want a room of our own, and that is exactly what Santa Fe's new $99,940 Steinway Model D Concert Grand Piano has at the rear of the Fine Arts Hall stage - an airconditioned, humidty-controlled room of its very own, in which it will "live" between performances.

Lest you think our new piano has been lazing about, not to worry. It has, in fact, been earning its keep at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, where it was used in a recent performance by world-renowned pianist André Watts. It is a tradition that all great pianists sign inside the Steinway on which they perform. Watts is the first to sign Santa Fe's piano (click photo for a larger view).

SF faculty David Goldblatt and Jonathan Gill will continue "breaking in" the piano. Both serve as accompanists for Santa Fe's Dance program and Gil teaches piano at Santa Fe.

Moving the Steinway to campus was no small task. Santa Fe Photographer Jim Atyeo recorded the Steinway's journey from the Performing Arts Center to its new home. Check out the process in this web gallery.
