100,000 Strong in the Americas

Overview

Santa Fe College received a 100,000 Strong in the Americas grant from the U.S. Department of State in order to implement a new virtual and face-to-face exchange program with students from the Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje (SENA) in Cartagena, Colombia.

The program sought to develop the information technology, cybersecurity, entrepreneurial, and intercultural skills of students from both institutions. SF and SENA administrators and professors began communicating and developing this project in 2017. Student virtual exchanges began at the end of that year. In March of 2018 SF students had the opportunity to travel to Cartagena, take technology classes there, and experience Colombian culture. At the end of March, a team of Colombian students travelled to Santa Fe College to experience American classrooms and culture and continue the group work they had started in Cartagena. The American and Colombian information technology students worked in multilingual and multicultural groups to develop a working server and learn how to secure it. In the end, they developed their intercultural competence, information technology skills, and entrepreneurship skills. They also created strong friendships despite their language barriers.
