Student arrested after anonymous gun tip; no threat found
November 7, 2024
Santa Fe College Police were notified about an anonymous tip to the college's non-emergency See Something, Say Something reporting portal about an overheard conversation involving a person potentially carrying a gun on campus. It led to the arrest of a 21-year-old student.
Police were able to determine who the subject of the tip might be and waited for him outside of a classroom Thursday afternoon.
Because the contact was made in a building near the Santa Fe College Academy, a charter high school on campus, the school was put on a "Hold" for about 25 minutes, in an abundance of caution. Students and staff remained in a safe space until given clearance to resume normal activity.
Fortunately, police found no threat to the Academy or the college community.
Jordan Tucker was arrested for carrying a firearm on a college campus. He had two handguns in a backpack.
College officials praised the use of the See Something, Say Something initiative, created to support the reporting of concerning or threatening behavior that suggests harm to SF students, staff or visitors.
"We are thankful this situation was not something more serious. It did demonstrate See Something, Say Something works," said Police Chief Ed Book.
Santa Fe College is one of only six colleges in the 28-college Florida College System with a police department and has been named among the nation's safest colleges.
