Sigue Sonañdo Welcomes Large Crowd for Open House Event
October 25, 2024
Prospective students from as far away as Jacksonville and Lake City were among the more than 150 prospective students and family members who participated in Sigue Sonañdo Oct. 24 at Santa Fe College's Blount Hall.
The program was created to help Spanish-speaking residents explore options and opportunities at Santa Fe College. It is held once each fall and spring term. This year multiple nations were represented including Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela.
Attendees learned about the admissions process and numerous programs and services at the College, including ESOL, International Student Services, career and technical programs, and student advising.
In addition to college departments, community partners tabled at the event:
- Latina Women's League
- Tu Fiesta Radio 95.7 FM
- The Rural Women's Health Project
- Alachua County Library District Literacy Program
Participants were treated to refreshments.
As our community's Spanish-speaking population began to grow, Santa Fe College recognized the need for an event where prospective students could bring their families in an environment that was supportive and helpful. Event organizers said that often family members are not bilingual, so they wanted to make it easier for them to have their questions answered.
Sigue Soñando was organized and presented by Marina Jordan, Tatiana Velasco, Karen Elliott, Shannon Leontiades, Sandra Varela, Teresa Moyano, Javier Sampedro, Eugene Zaldivar and Monica Cabrera.
