First Gen Day at Santa Fe College Celebrates Resilience and Community
November 7, 2024
On Wednesday, Nov. 6, the Santa Fe College community came together on the Northwest Campus to celebrate First Gen Day. Organized by the First-Generation Student Advisory Group, the student-led event highlighted the experiences and resilience of first-generation college students, whose parents did not complete a four-year degree.
Throughout the event, group members shared their stories, emphasizing the unique challenges and strengths of first-generation students. Cristina Rodriguez Acosta, one of the event's speakers, encouraged students by highlighting the shared experiences of first-generation faculty and staff.
"[First-generation] faculty and staff have gone through what you are now," she said. "Remember, you are not alone here."
First-generation college students often face unique challenges, such as limited knowledge of college systems, financial pressures, and a lack of academic preparedness, which can affect their confidence. Many juggle family responsibilities and feel pressure to succeed, especially without a family history of college to lean on.
As a member of the national FirstGen Forward Network, Santa Fe College is committed to supporting first-generation students. Faculty and staff—many of whom come from first-generation backgrounds themselves—offer guidance, resources and skills to help these students succeed in their academic endeavors.
Janell Cruz, another student speaker, expressed her pride in the journey of first-generation students.
"I know the power behind a First Gen student," she said, explaining that this strength helps students like her fulfill "the dreams parents had but couldn't attain on their own."
Students had the opportunity to connect with various Santa Fe College resources, with tables from departments like the Academic Advisement Center, the Institute of Public Safety and the Teaching Zoo offering guidance and information. The event also allowed students to share stories and receive advice from peers who understand their challenges, helping to build a supportive network for ongoing success.
