CTLE Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Sarah Cervone – Enhancing Global Perspectives

October 15, 2024

In this month’s Faculty Spotlight, we feature Dr. Sarah Cervone, an Associate Professor of Humanities at Santa Fe College. With a PhD in Cultural Anthropology and a master's in Religion from the University of Florida, she is dedicated to enriching the educational experience for her students and colleagues.

This spotlight highlights Dr. Cervone’s recent professional development trips with the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) to Senegal and Mongolia. She strongly believes that faculty professional development is imperative in keeping students as the focus of learning. By integrating international experiences into her classroom, she helps students shift their focus from merely memorizing facts to understanding the broader context of their education.

Dr. Cervone emphasizes the importance of helping students move from "what" to "why," encouraging them to think globally about their learning. She notes that educators must lead by example, continuously developing and expanding their own horizons to facilitate difficult conversations and broaden students' perspectives. Her excitement about the trip to Mongolia stemmed from its connections to climate change and culture, aligning perfectly with her work on the Florida Heritage Foods Project. Through these experiences, she aims to keep her classes fresh and relevant, ensuring that they remain engaging and impactful for her students.
