May 25th is Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a day to honor and mourn the military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is holding a virtual Memorial Day ceremony(Opens in new window) on Monday, May 25th at 1 p.m. Visit the event page(Opens in new window) to leave a written or video message and take a virtual tour of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial(Opens in new window) in Washington, D.C. Take a moment to reflect by visiting one of the many veterans memorials throughout Alachua County(Opens in new window) or wherever you are located. This year also marks the first Memorial Day since the passing of local WWII veteran U.S. Marine Corporal Robert "Bob" Gasche. Gasche was one of the last surviving WWII Marines who participated in the assault on Iwo Jima. He is decorated in medals including a Purple Heart and he was a captivating speaker, sharing his experiences on SF's campus many times.
