Stringed Instruments Featured in Chamber Music Recital Nov. 1, 2023 in the Lyceum
September 27, 2023
September 27, 2023 – The sounds of violin, viola and cello will blend in a chamber music recital offered by students of Santa Fe College (SF) Adjunct Professor of Music Maurya Dickerson at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023 in the Lyceum in Building E at SF's Northwest Campus, 3000 NW 83 Street, Gainesville.
The recital is free and tickets are not required.
The six students who will play together in the recital have all been studying their instruments for at least five years. On the program are Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Quartet No. 4 in C Major"; Johan Halvorsen's "Passacaglia for Violin and Viola" that is based on a work by George Frideric Handel; Alexander Borodin's "String Trio in G Major"; and Franz Schubert's "String Trio in B-flat Major, D. 471."
"There aren't many options for students to play in string ensembles in our area," Dickerson explained. "The recital is a unique opportunity that will help these advanced students build their ensemble skills while becoming self-sufficient musicians."
The chamber music course is new at Santa Fe College, having begun in spring term 2022 under Dickerson's guidance. Because chamber music is unique in that there is no conductor, the course was designed to provide string players the opportunity to perform as an ensemble. The students rehearse and prepare the music themselves with feedback from their instructor. Working in this way, students learn by understanding how their individual musical parts fit with other parts and by making stylistic choices from tempo to dynamic range.
Dickerson, who plays both violin and viola, has bachelors' degrees in music and geography from the University of Florida and a master's degree in music performance from Boston University. She currently plays with the Ocala and Venice (Florida) symphonies and with the Gainesville Chamber Orchestra. She has also performed at the Zodiac Chamber Music Festival in France and at the Virtuoso & Belcanto Music Festival in Italy.
"I am looking forward to growing the strings program at Santa Fe College and increasing participation in chamber music," Dickerson said.
The chamber music recital is sponsored and organized by the Santa Fe College Fine and Performing Arts and Entertainment Technology Department. For more information, call Maurya Dickerson at 352-395-3862.
