February 8, 2023
February 8, 2023 -Student musicians in the Santa Fe Winds will perform in "Winds Go Pop!" a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, 2023, in the Lyceum Concert Hall.
Although the concert is free, concertgoers will need tickets because of space limitations. Call the Santa Fe Box Office at 352-395-4181 or visit the Showpass link for tickets at showpass.com/winds-go-pop/.
Associate Professor of Music and Band Director David L. Smith will conduct the 11 students in the Santa Fe Winds. "We have a program that includes music that was popular in the past and music that is still popular today. There is something for everyone on this program. You'll tap your feet if you're a movie fan and bob your head if you're hip to 1960s and '70s pop music," Smith explained.
Moviegoers will recognize musical themes from "Star Wars" by the celebrated composer John Williams. "Disney Film Classics" will feature familiar tunes from three Disney movies.
One of the concert's features is "Soul Bossa Nova," by the multi-talented African American composer, record producer, musician, arranger, and film and television producer Quincy Jones. "This music is an interesting take on the bossa nova style because it incorporates elements of soul music," Smith said. "The piece is from Jones's album 'Big Band Bossa Nova' that pays tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim, who's called 'the father of bossa nova.' Audiences will recognize it as the theme from the 'Austin Powers' movies!"
To prepare for the concert, the students spent time listening to recordings of the popular selections that will be performed. "The only way to learn pop music is from the source, from the creators of the music," Smith explained. "The students are learning this and having a lot of fun enjoying the music."
"Winds Go Pop!" is organized and sponsored by the Santa Fe College Fine and Performing Arts and Entertainment Technology Department.
