Twelfth Habitat House Built by Santa Fe College Students Set to Leave Campus May 17

May 9, 2022 – For more than a decade, students in Santa Fe College's Construction and Technical programs have partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build a home for a family in North Central Florida. This week, students are wrapping up their work on the twelfth house build by the students in the Charles R. Perry Construction Institute, and the house is scheduled to leave the Northwest Campus and head to its permanent location in Gainesville Tuesday, May 17.
Students studying to enter the fields of carpentry, HVAC, electrical and plumbing, have worked alongside crews from Habitat as well as the family who will ultimately become the home's new owners to construct the new facility.
"This has been an incredible partnership with Habitat for Humanity and the Builders Association of North Central Florida," SF President Paul Broadie II, Ph.D. said. "Our students not only get the valuable training they need to be successful in their chosen fields, but also get the opportunity to serve the community and help promote social and economic mobility for a family in our community."
The home, which will be moved to the 1400 block of NE 4th Avenue in Gainesville will have a few finishing touches added before it will be ready to be transferred to a family in need. Families selected to receive a Habitat house have themselves volunteered for Habitat for Humanity in order to be eligible.
Rod Thomas, chair of SF's Construction and Technical programs, added that the house "provides hands-on training and real-world experience for our students while also, as the community's college, supporting a deserving family and making the dream of home ownership a reality. Every house our students help build is an incredible accomplishment, and we are excited to continue our partnership into the future."
Moving crews are set to be at the Charles R. Perry Construction Institute (Building O) by 8 a.m., and the home should be on its way to its permanent location by 9 a.m.
Work on the 13th Habitat house is scheduled to begin in the fall.
