The Fine Arts Hall is now allowing audiences at full capacity. "Throughout history's difficulties, music and the arts have provided society with a lifeline with which to cope," said Professor of Music and Choral Director Lynn Sandefur. "The musical selections in this program mirror what has gone on everywhere in the world recently and what is still going on-the courage, strength, hope, loyalty, love and even some fun things. Our show includes soloists and ensembles, a dancer and the Santa Fe Band in addition to our full choir."
Sandefur and Assistant Choral Director Jessica Van Leer explained that the SF Singers hope to take the audience on a decades-long trip through music that taps into all of the senses. Program selections include "Lamentations of Jeremiah" that interprets the cries of the Biblical prophet, music by Andrew Lloyd Webber from Broadway's "The Phantom of the Opera," "Omnia Sol Temperat" ("Through Sorrow or Distance, Let Your Heart Be Stayed") from "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff, and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" with music by Duke Ellington and lyrics by Irving Mills.
Dance Professor Sarah Harkness will perform with the singers in the "Phantom of the Opera" selection. The Santa Fe Band, under the direction of Associate Professor of Music David L. Smith, will accompany the singers on two songs.
The 28 student singers have majors as varied as accounting, engineering, health sciences and psychology in addition to music. "Learning and performing music uses both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously," Sandefur said. "Music and the fine arts provide important opportunities for students to learn creative, team-building and interpersonal skills that they can use in all areas of their professional and personal lives."
"Sing Into Spring" is organized and sponsored by the Santa Fe College Fine Arts and Entertainment Media Department. For more information about the Santa Fe Singers and the college's vocal music program, call Sandefur at 352-381-3639. For ticket information, call the SF Box Office at 352-395-4181.
