ABFS Black History Month Feature: Judge Stephan P. Mickle

February 15, 2022 – In honor of Black History Month, Santa Fe College's Association of Black Faculty and Staff (ABFS) will offer information important to SF and the community at large.
This week, the topic is – Judge Stephan P. Mickle
Judge Stephan P. Mickle was a U.S. District Judge recognized as a civil rights pioneer. He was the first African American to establish a law practice in Gainesville. Continuing to make history, he was the first African American county judge in Alachua County and the first African American circuit court judge in the Eighth Judicial Circuit. He was the first African American federal judge in the First District Court of Appeal. He was also the first African American federal judge in the U.S. District Court at the Northern District of Florida. On your next trip downtown ABFS encourage you to notice the Judge Stephan P. Mickle Courthouse which was named in his honor.
