City of Gainesville Local Government Fellowship Program
May 24, 2021
Would you like to help the City address some of the complex issues facing our community
by asking critical questions, researching best practices, and working collaboratively
with others to gain understanding of needs, barriers, and possible solutions? If so,
the City of Gainesville and Civic Engagement and Service at Santa Fe College encourage you to apply for the City of Gainesville Local Government Fellowship program.
This paid, part-time fellowship will provide students with opportunities to perform
project based work, improve real-world city issues and meet strategic goals under
the mentorship of City of Gainesville staff. The Summer 2021 fellowship will hire
a Community Development Fellow.
The Community Development Fellow will focus heavily on food access and food systems
initiatives, but may also include community engagement initiatives around topics like
food systems, community health and wellbeing, resource accessibility, and workforce
development. The Fellow may be encouraged to collaborate across multiple departments
at the City of Gainesville, as well as with partner institutions like local nonprofits,
the University of Florida, Santa Fe College, and others. By learning from past local
initiatives, existing data sets, and examples of solutions implemented in other cities
addressing these challenges, the Community Development Fellow will have the opportunity
to identify strategies and tools that can benefit our local community.
You may be a good fit if you are an intrinsically motivated person who seeks to learn
more about the issues facing our community, is comfortable utilizing multiple sources
of information to answer complex questions, and values a diversity in perspectives
and knowledge. We are looking for someone who:
- Has experience using both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
- Has experience participating in community-based efforts to address local issues
- Is interested in learning how to collect feedback from diverse stakeholder groups (i.e. conducting surveys, interviews, focus groups)
- Is comfortable communicating with diverse stakeholders to foster trust, respect, and an open space for idea sharing and collaboration.
Fellows will be expected to work an average of 15 to 20 hours per week throughout
their fellowship. The City is committed to all employees making a living wage. For
2021, starting pay for fellows is $14.25 per hour.
The deadline for this fellowship application is 11:59 PM on Sunday, June 6, 2021. If you submitted an application for this fellowship in April, you do not need to
reapply. Applicants must be Santa Fe College students who are enrolled during the
Summer 2021 semester. Please complete and submit this application and e-mail a copy of your résumé and a letter of recommendation from an academic or professional reference to Sarah Blanc at sarah.blanc@sfcollege.edu by 11:59 PM on Sunday, June 6, 2021.
