Americans are fighting against American values of democracy and free speech every day on social media through their dissemination of conspiracy theories.
The most important conflict zone right now is QAnon, a grand labyrinth of silly and dangerous ideas which is breeding domestic terrorism.
This talk will explore these issues and how Russia and China are winning a global digital war against free expression online through their successful exploitation of gullible Americans on social media.
American companies like Facebook work with hostile foreign governments to eventually erode American commitment to the First Amendment of the Constitution by using social media conspiracies to activate misguided citizens to become domestic terrorists.
- Presenter: Dr. Jorge Duany, Director of the Cuban Research Institute, Florida International University
- Date: Thursday, October 8th
- Time: 3:30pm

Florida will once again be a swing state in the 2020 presidential election, and the Hispanic vote in the state will be more critical than ever before.
Historically, Cuban-Americans have tended to vote Republican while Puerto Ricans have tended to vote for Democrats.
But do these trends still hold true, particularly in Florida?
Do Cuban-Americans under 40 years of age vote the same as their parents and grandparents? Are the new wave of Puerto Ricans who migrated to Florida after Hurricane Maria more conservative than other Puerto Ricans throughout the country?
Join us for this lecture as Dr. Jorge Duany, one of the leading experts on the Cuban and Puerto Rican diaspora, explore these issues and shares the latest polling data on these Latino groups.
