SF Softball: Saints sweep TCC; 9-1, 8-3
February 5, 2020
February 5, 2020 – Cris Beasley pitched a complete game in the opener and closed out the final two innings in the nightcap as the Santa Fe Saints softball team defeated Tallahassee Community College in both games of the doubleheader 9-1 and 8-3 Tuesday afternoon.
"Cris Beasley was phenomenal in the circle today," said SF head coach Lindsay Fico. "Her control and ability to get ahead in the count made for quick outs."
Karina Ortiz-Munoz got things started in the opener when she led off the bottom of the first inning with her first home run of the year and the Saints tacked two more runs on three batters later when Dara Gaylard homered with Grace Prom on base.
The game was shortened to five innings due to the 8-run mercy rule when the Saints scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jessica Parsells and Savana Terry each picked up RBI with bases loaded walks and Ortiz-Munoz ended the game with an RBI single.
The Saints jumped out on top in game two, scoring four runs in the first inning which included Prom's third home run of the year after a single by Ortiz-Munoz.
The TCC Eagles (1-4) chipped away at the lead with single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings making it a 4-3 SF lead heading to the bottom of the fifth.
The Saints first three batters reached in the fifth when Laila Dickey singled, Jaye Carter reached on an error and Savana Terry walked. TCC pitcher Emily Oakes was able to retire the next two batters without allowing a run but Ortiz-Munoz came through again with a three-run double and scored on a single by Prom to make it 8-3.
"Karina (Ortiz-Munoz) was huge at the plate today and Prom continues to thrive going 3-for-3 in the first game and getting three RBI in game two," said Fico. "Dara Gaylard and Laila Dickey were also a threat in the box all day. They both continue to have quality at bats."
Beasley (3-0) earned the win in game one while Donnie Gobourne (3-0) notched her third win of the year in the nightcap.
The Saints (6-0) will stay at home to host State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota for a doubleheader Saturday with the first game beginning at 1 p.m.
