STEM Fest 2019 at SF's Perry Center November 18 and 19

November 13, 2019 – Santa Fe College's Perry Center for Emerging Technologies is hosting STEM Fest 2019 Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 18 and 19. Seminars begin at 6 p.m. both nights, with light refreshments served in advance of each session. STEM Fest is an opportunity for SF to engage in discussions and learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, as well as highlight the work being done by students at the Perry Center in STEM fields.
Monday's keynote speaker is Dr. Laria Capua, director of the One Health Center of Excellence at the University of Florida. Dr. Capua has dedicated most of her professional life to viral infections of animals that can be transmitted to humans, like Avian influenza (bird flu), Newcastle disease, and Rabies. Prior to joining UF, Dr. Capua served as Vice President of the Science, Culture, and Education Commission on the Italian Parliament.
Tuesday's keynote features Dr. Lerah Sutton, director of the Forensic Medicine Educational Program at UF's College of Medicine and the assistant director for the UF Maples Center for Forensic Medicine. Dr. Sutton's areas of specialization include human decomposition, estimation of the postmortem interval, forensic taphonomy and forensic entomology. At the request of law enforcement agencies, she frequently responds to death investigation scenes and consults on both active and cold cases.
