Saints Notch Win in Grueling Five Sets

August 22, 2019

August 22, 2019 – The Saints volleyball team fought hard to force a fifth set and claim a 3-2 win against the Lake-Sumter State College Lakehawks Wednesday. The home opener drew big crowds to cheer the team as they earned each point.

Each set saw both the Saints and Lakehawks go point-for-point and some long rallies, with both teams trying to come out on top. The Saints, however, had to overcome serving woes to keep themselves in the game. "Service errors really prevented us from playing the way we do," stated Saints head coach Nick Cheronis. "Once that evened out, then we got into how we win."

Key offensive plays gave the Saints a much needed push to get to their first win of the season. "Maddie Sheffield was the key to our offense," Cheronis continued. "She really steadied the left side, but we probably would not have won without Zoey Chilcote's energy." Sheffield ended the night with 22 kills. Chilcote added 11 kills on a .435 hitting percentage and had five blocks.

On the defensive side, sophomore libero Jenna Wiggs set an SF record with a whopping 39 digs on the match. "She was everywhere," said Cheronis.

The Saints (1-0) are back in action Friday night for the Santa Fe College/Campus USA tournament as they host State College of Florida, Sarasota-Manatee at 7 p.m. The tournament continues for the team Saturday with 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. matches against Palm Beach State College and Daytona State College.
