March 20, 2019 – The Santa Fe College Wind Ensemble will celebrate the arrival of spring with a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2019, in the Santa Fe College Fine Arts Hall on the Northwest Campus. The newly formed Santa Fe College Percussion Ensemble, directed by Music Professor Garrett Hecker, will open the concert.

Tickets are $15 for adults; $9 for seniors, children and University of Florida students; and free for SF students, faculty and staff with college identification cards. For ticket information, call the Box Office at 352-395-4181 or visit the Fine Arts ticket website at sfcollege.edu/finearts.

"The tunes we've chosen to perform are designed to help you usher in the spring season," said Dr. Steve Bingham, the director of bands at Santa Fe College. This will be the Wind Ensemble's final concert for the 2018-2019 academic year.

The program includes:

  • "Barnum and Bailey's Favorite March," a bouncy melody originally written for the circus of the same name in 1913 by Karl L. King.
  • "Concerto for Trombone and Military Band," written in 1877 by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and performed by Noah Greene on the euphonium with accompaniment by the ensemble in two of the concerto's four movements.
  • Two pieces by Gainesville composer Sonya Lenore Stahl-"She Will Hang the Night With Stars" that evokes dreamy night air and glittering skies, and "Piltdown Man," a jovial dance-like tune.
  • Selections from Georges Bizet's opera "Carmen," including "Habanera" and "Toreador March," arranged by Dr. Chris Sharp of Lynchburg University in Virginia.
  • "Symphonic Dance No. 3 (Fiesta)" by Clifton Williams.
  • "Star Wars Epic Suite No. II," a combination of themes from "Star Wars" episodes 4, 5 and 6, composed by John Williams.

"We performed music from 'Star Wars' episodes 1, 2, and 3 in February's concert and we hope the finale of this April concert will make you want to get out your lightsaber and defend your queen!" Bingham laughed.

The student musicians in the Wind Ensemble meet twice a week to rehearse with Bingham, who holds a Ph.D. in music education from the University of Florida and whose students have gone on to higher education at many of Florida's universities.
