SF Saints Will Play UF Baseball Friday and Softball Sunday
November 9, 2018
November 9, 2018 - GAINESVILLE – It's only "Fall Ball", the collegiate baseball and softball version MLB Spring Training, but it adds a bit of excitement to the Santa Fe Saints baseball and softball schedules to be playing the Florida Gators at any time of the year.
SF Head Coach Johnny Wiggs and his baseball team will take on the Gators at UF Friday afternoon for two, 7-inning exhibition games beginning at 3:30 pm. Admission is free.
"This is such a great opportunity for our program and our players to be able to play such a national powerhouse like Florida," said Wiggs. "As a former Gator, the opportunity to bring my team back to McKethan Stadium is a great honor. I appreciate Head Coach Kevin O'Sullivan and his staff for giving us this tremendous opportunity and experience."
Santa Fe has not played Florida in baseball since fall of 1987 (31 years) due to NCAA rules that were established at the time. Those rules have changed to allow these exhibition games to take place.
SF first-year Head Coach and Gator Alum Lindsay Fico and her softball team will host UF for one 10-inning game on the SF Northwest Campus on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
"Hosting the Gators this Sunday is a monumental opportunity for our program," said Fico. "I want to thank Coach Walton and his staff for giving us this chance to compete against one of the best programs in the nation. We look forward to a special afternoon of softball."
Saints softball and the Gators have played most every fall for the past 15 years, but this will be the first time the Gators travel across town to SF campus.
Those planning to attend Sunday's game are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and tents. Admission is free.
