Student-Choreographed "Room to Dance" June 15-16, 2018, at SF Fine Arts Hall
June 11, 2018
June 11, 2018 - Dance Theatre of Santa Fe's two performances of the student-choreographed production "Room to Dance" at 7:30 p.m. on June 15-16, 2018, will mark the end of the 2017-18 performing arts season in the Santa Fe College Fine Arts Hall. "Our dancers have been inspired all year and they're ready now to create on their own," explained "Room to Dance" Director Melissa Brenner.
Tickets are $15 main floor and $12 balcony for adults; $9 for seniors, children and University of Florida students; and free for Santa Fe College students, faculty and staff with a valid SF ID card. For ticket information, call the SF Box Office at 352-395-4181 or visit the SF Fine Arts ticket website at sfcollege.edu/finearts.
"The dances include ballet, modern, musical theatre, hip-hop, jazz, partnering and classical Indian dance," said Brenner, who co-directs the Dance Theatre of Santa Fe. "This is the largest group of selections we've had to date and that's because our student choreographers have been so inspired by what they've experienced this past year! Our students collaborated with guest artists from the New York Dance Project to co-choreograph a piece. The students also attended the American College Dance Association's annual festival, where they saw dances by many different choreographers, and they learned about choreography in their classes here at the college."
Brenner describes "Room to Dance" as "a crowd favorite" because of the young choreographers' freshness and energy. "There's something very pure that people love about the work of emerging young artists, their perspectives and their brand-new ideas. Their dances are full of excitement, passion and energy, and that's what comes across on stage."
"Room to Dance" is an educational process from beginning to end. The students create the concepts and choreography for their dances, choose their music, hold auditions, select their casts and keep attendance at rehearsals. They make costume decisions, work with Lighting Designer Elizabeth Reynolds and Stage Manager Sarah White, and consult with Dance Department faculty members in order to manifest their vision on the stage. "They have to follow many procedures and that's lots of work!" Brenner exclaimed.
