SF Baseball: Hemenway, Jones Combine to Shutout FSC-J 4-0

April 16, 2018

April 13, 2018 - Jacksonville, FL – The Santa Fe College Saints tightened their grip on first place in the Mid-Florida Conference with a 4-0 win on the road over Florida State College-Jacksonville, completing a four game season sweep over the Blue Wave. The win is the twelfth in a row for the #1 ranked team in the nation, who have not suffered a defeat since March 17.

Devin Hemenway (5-2) tossed seven strong innings, striking out six and Tyler Jones earned his third save of the season with two scoreless innings. The two pitchers combined to scatter five hits, all singles.

SF (35-6, 16-2 MFC) struck first, plating a run in the second inning on a sacrifice squeeze executed by Nick Lentz to score Cade Westbrook.

It wasn't until the eighth that Santa Fe got back on the board. Andrew Eyster belted his 15 double of the season to score Garrett Mathes and the Saints lead was doubled to 2-0. Haydn Cano followed Eyster up with a single to make it 3-0 and in the ninth Mikey Navarrete singled home an insurance run for the 4-0 lead.

That's all Tyler Jones would need to close the game out in the bottom of the ninth.

The win keeps SF 2.5 games ahead of the College of Central Florida and St. John's River State College in the Mid-Florida Conference standings with six games left for Santa Fe and five for CF and SJR.

The Saints are scheduled to battle Daytona State on Sunday, April 15 in Gainesville at 1:00 p.m.
