April 6, 2018 – The Santa Fe College Fine Arts department will host acclaimed British pianist Sam Haywood as part of SF's Master Artist Series Friday, April 20, 2018. at 7:30 p.m. in the SF Fine Arts Hall.

Haywood will be at SF the week of April 16-20 as part of the Master Artist program that brings professional performers to Gainesville to mentor students in the SF Fine Arts Department programs. While he is on campus, he will offer a seminar for and meet with students in Associate Professor Mitch McKay's piano classes as they prepare for a recital on Thursday, April 19. Haywood will also teach a master class for students at SF and the University of Florida.

The week of activities will be capped by Haywood's Master Artist Series concert on April 20, for which he has chosen a program that features music by Schubert, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Stanford, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Chabrier and de Falla. He will also perform one of his own compositions, "The Other Side," that was inspired by Alfred Kubin's novel about a journey to a dream kingdom-a mysterious city deep in Asia or perhaps also the unconscious mind-that evolves into a nightmare.

"Sam Haywood first visited us in 2016 and we're thrilled that he is able to return this year," said SF Fine Arts Department Chair Alora Haynes. "For our music students, being able to learn from a talented professional like Sam is an unforgettable experience."

Equally at home as a soloist or as a chamber musician, Haywood has been a regular duo partner with world-renowned violinist Joshua Bell since 2010. Haywood often performs with British cellist Steven Isserlis. In 2013, Haywood founded the Solent Music Festival based in Lymington, England, that features programs by internationally known artists.

Haywood's concert is sponsored in part by Santa Fe College, SF Student Life, and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture and Visit Gainesville, a Tourist Development Tax Grant from the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners in conjunction with the Alachua County Tourist Development Council.
