February 1, 2018 – Santa Fe College is continuing efforts to mitigate the impact of the flu virus at the college. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting widespread flu virus in nearly every state in the nation including Florida.

As a result of this, the SF Student Health Center is offering flu vaccines to SF students, faculty and staff for $25. They are also offering masks at no cost to anyone exhibiting symptoms.

SF employees enrolled in one of the college's Florida Blue medical plans can also get a free flu vaccine from Walgreens by presenting their insurance card.

Despite widespread cases of the flu in the state, the CDC says it is not too late to get a flu vaccine. The CDC also recommends the following steps to prevent getting the flu, or minimize your risk.

  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you do get flu-like symptoms, you should stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever breaks.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Clean frequently touched objects and surfaces like doorknobs, keyboards and phones.

SF's Human Resources department offers guidance to employees and supervisors on leave related issues because of the flu including alternate scheduling and flexibility with accrued leave time. Contact HR for more details at 352-395-5185.
