Santa Fe College Calls for Papers on "Hemingway: Between Key West and Cuba"
May 16, 2017
May 16, 2017 - Santa Fe College will host the "Hemingway: Between Key West and Cuba" conference at the Northwest Campus July 20-22, 2017. The college invites proposals for 20-minute papers on any topic related to Ernest Hemingway's life and work in Key West and Cuba. All critical approaches, including theoretical and pedagogical, are welcomed. Proposals for organized two-person panels are also encouraged.
Possible topics could include: race; gender; class; history; geography; religion; the natural environment; hunting; fishing; myth; language; and modernism.
The conference is being held to celebrate the 80 anniversary of publication of Ernest Hemingway's novel, "To Have and Have Not," that is set in Key West and Cuba in the 1930s.
"The unique thing about this conference is the focus on Key West and Cuba," said SF Cultural Programs Coordinator Raul Villarreal, who is co-directing the conference with SF Associate Vice President for Advancement Michael Curry. "The Hemingway Society is considering having its conference in Cuba for the first time in 2020. We hope the conference here in Gainesville can help pave the way for that to happen."
Raul Villarreal is the author of "Hemingway's Cuban Son: Reflections on the Writer by His Longtime Majordomo" (Kent State University Press) and the son of René Villarreal, who was Hemingway's estate manager in Cuba.
In addition to the paper sessions, the conference will include a presentation by Valerie Hemingway, author of "Running with the Bulls: My Years with the Hemingways" and a visit to the SF planetarium for a special presentation of "Hemingway's Stars and Constellations."
Invited speakers include Hemingway scholars Larry Grimes and Sandra Spanier as well as Ada Rosa Rosales and Gladys Rodriguez Ferrero, experts on Hemingway's life in Cuba.
To submit a proposal for the conference, email a 200-300 word abstract and short professional biography to Raul Villarreal at raul.villarreal@sfcollege.edu by June 1, 2017. Acceptance notifications will be sent out by June 7, 2017.
