Student Police Dialogues a Success

April 24, 2017

April 21, 2017 - The River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding facilitated another "student / police dialogues" at Santa Fe College this past week. The SF Police Department personnel were joined by four other area law enforcement agencies and a facilitator from the Gainesville Police Department. The dialogues were designed to talk openly and honestly about nationwide controversial topics such as racial and ethnic disparity, attitudes towards youth and police, mutual understanding and respect, and disproportionate minority contact.

SF College students attending were primarily from the CareerSource Institute for Workforce Innovation (IWI).

The four-hour session was coordinated by Department of Student Development Instruction Chair Dr. Kalpana Swamy, MBK Coordinator Aminah Harris, and Administrative Assistant Joseph Jester. Lunch was graciously provided by Clear Sound Audiology (http://www.clearsoundaudiology.com/ ).

This is the 5th session held over the last year with police, students and faculty. Each time mostly different students, staff and law enforcement attend allowing more to learn and giving fresh perspectives to these engaging sessions.
