Gainesville, FL – Santa Fe College, the defending Mid-Florida Conference champions, won their second straight title on Friday afternoon in Daytona, defeating the Falcons 10-1. The championship is the SF Saints' seventh in the last 11 seasons.
"Our guys have worked hard since August to make this happen," said SF Coach Johnny Wiggs. "This has been a very consistent group in their effort and performance, and it paid off. I'm very proud of them."
Controlling their own destiny, the Santa Fe College Saints (36-11, 19-5 MFC) scored a pair of runs in the first inning on Stephen Smith's fifth homerun of the year, and added three more in the second.
A run in the third made it a 6-0 game. The lone run for Daytona on SF starter Sean Gabel (8-1) came in the bottom of the third.
Santa Fe College would add insurance runs late in the game and cruise to the MFC title.
The SF Saints 10 runs came via six hits and five Falcons errors. Smith was 1-for-4 with a homerun, Danny DiMare continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-5 with two runs.
Next up for the Saints will be the FCSAA Tournament in Lakeland, FL at Joker Marchant Stadium, May 5-10. SF will play their first game on May 6 at 1 p.m. against a team to be determined.
