Saints Mow Past Lake Sumter in Seven Innings, 16-5

Gainesville, FL – For the fourth time in the last eight games, the Santa Fe College Saints won by ten-run mercy rule, this time 16-5 over Lake Sumter State College. SF (35-11, 18-5 MFC) swept the four game season series, outscoring the Lakehawks 45-12 in the process. With a win in the regular season finale at Daytona State College Friday, the Saints would clinch their second straight Mid-Florida Conference championship.
The game was all Saints from the outset as they scored two in the second, three in the third, and two in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. The Lakehawks answered in the fourth, scoring four on SF starter Robert Girgis to trim the lead to 7-5.
The SF Saints bounced back with three in the fifth and a big four spot in the sixth to pull away. Two more in the seventh made it an 11-run game and a shutout inning in the bottom of the seventh by reliever Mitch Campion ended the game early.
Girgis went five innings for his eighth win of the season.
The Santa Fe College bats produced seven extra base hits including four homeruns, on each for Alex Goebel, Dillon Reed, Kyle Phillips and Brandon Hernandez.
Goebel led the Saints going 3-for-5 with a homerun, two doubles, two runs and three RBI. Hernandez was 3-for-5 with a homerun, three runs and three RBI, Kyle Phillips went 3-for-4 with a homerun, two runs and two RBI, Dillon Reed was 3-for-4 with a homerun, three runs and three RBI, and Leo Rodriguez had a pair of hits and knocked in two.
