Gainesville, FL – Robert Girgis, the reigning NJCAA National Pitcher of the Week, got off to a rough start Friday afternoon against Lake Sumter giving up three straight hits in the first inning against Lake Sumter State College, including a three-run homerun to put Santa Fe College in an early hole. From there he was lights out, not allowing another hit for six innings.
The NJCAA #15/FCSAA #6 Saints (28-9, 11-3 MFC) offense picked him up immediately, scoring four runs in the top of the second to grab the lead. The four runs came via RBI from Jeff Misener (2), Mikey Navarrete and Wyatt Miesterhans.
In the fifth Alex Goebel drew a two out walk and Dillon Reed followed with his third home run of the season to make it 6-3.
An inning later Kyle Phillips padded the SF lead with a two-run triple for the final margin.
Girgis (6-1) went six strong innings, striking out eight to earn the win. Ricky Miranda finished off the last three innings, allowing just two hits and no runs.
Reed, who shares a March 31 birthday with Kyle Phillips, went 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored. He now has nine hits in his last four games. Phillips was 1-for-3 with three RBI, and Jeff Misener was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
