Saints Defeat Lake Sumter 12-4, Catapult into First in the MFC

Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe College Saints (27-9, 10-3 MFC) jumped into first place in the Mid-Florida Conference Wednesday afternoon thanks to a 12-4 win over Lake Sumter State College and a loss by St. John's River State to Florida State College at Jacksonville.
The SF offense tallied 12 runs on 16 hits, including a 3-for-4, four RBI day for left fielder Dillon Reed. Stephen Smith continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-3 with a double two runs scored, and two RBI. Brandon Hernandez doubled in his final two at bats, finishing 2-for-4. Danny DiMare, Leo Rodriguez, and Kyle Phillips had two hits each. Every position in the Saints batting order had at least one hit.
SF Saints put four runs on the board in the first and added to their 4-3 lead in the fifth with five runs, including a three-run homer from Alex Goebel. Two in the sixth and a run in the seventh rounded out the scoring.
Kyle Morton started on the hill and earned the win with five innings of work. Mitch Campion pitched two solid innings, with just one runner reaching base on a throwing error.
Tyler Moore and Troy Bacon pitched an inning each to sew up the win.
The Saints and Lakehawks will square off again Friday in Leesburg for the second game of their series at 3 p.m.
