Three Bands and Vocalists Featured in "Evening of Jazz" on Nov. 17, 2016

Music Professor and Band Director Dr. Steve Bingham, Ph.D., will direct the Santa Fe Rhythm & Blues Band, the Santa Fe Jazz Combo, and the Santa Fe Big Band in a 90-minute "Evening of Jazz" concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016, in the Fine Arts Hall at the SF College Northwest Campus, 3000 NW 83 Street, Gainesville. Students in Music Professor Lynn Sandefur's vocal jazz classes will add spice to the performance.

Tickets are $15 main floor and $12 balcony for adults; $9 for seniors, children and University of Florida students; and free for Santa Fe College faculty, staff and students with college identification cards. The audience will enjoy music by composers ranging from Rodgers and Hammerstein to Charles Mingus, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Otis Redding. On the program are classics such as "There Will Never Be Another You," "All the Things You Are," and "Malaguena" along with the R&B tunes "Gimme Some Lovin'," "(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay," and "Shake, Rattle and Roll." "Boogie Stop Shuffle" by Charles Mingus, "Tickle Toe" by Lester Young and "Samba Del Gringo" by Gordon Goodwin are included.

Featured vocalists include Gerald Bigas, Jeremy Cutter, Julia Diven, Rowan Housden, Lauren Schinnow and Jordan Watson.

Bingham holds a bachelor's degree in music education and a master's degree in curriculum and instruction, both from the University of Missouri, a master's degree from Florida State University (FSU) and a Ph.D. in music education from the University of Florida (UF). He has had a long career as a band director and professional musician in Missouri, North Carolina and Florida. In the Gainesville area, he has directed bands at Gainesville and Newberry high schools. As music professor and director of bands at SF College, "Doc B" teaches the college's applied woodwind students (clarinet, saxophone and oboe) and online courses in music appreciation. He directs the SF Wind Ensemble in addition to the Rhythm & Blues Combo, Jazz Band, and Big Band. In the past, his woodwind students have gone on to higher education at UF, FSU, University of South Florida, University of North Florida and University of Central Florida.
