It's a multi-generational family favorite when the strings meet a flute, an oboe, and a clarinet on a beautiful morning in the meadow. But after Grandfather Bassoon dampens the mood with his strict warning about the French horns, it takes a combination of strings and timpani drums to (mostly) save the day. If this sounds familiar, it's because the instruments and their themes represent the characters in Sergei Prokofiev's narrated symphony, "Peter and the Wolf."

The Dance Theatre of Santa Fe will present a full-length ballet theatre production of "Peter and the Wolf" at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016, at the Fine Arts Hall on the Northwest Campus, 3000 NW 83 Street, Gainesville.

Tickets are $15 main floor and $12 balcony for adults; $9 for seniors, children and University of Florida students; and free for Santa Fe College faculty, staff and students with college identification cards. For ticket information, call the Box Office at 352-395-4181 or visit the Fine Arts ticket website at:

Choreographed by Fine Arts Department Chairperson Alora Haynes, "Peter and the Wolf" is set to a 1978 recording by the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy and narrated by David Bowie. Bowie described his work on the project as a Christmas present for his son, Duncan Jones, who was then seven years old.

"I had so much fun choreographing this ballet with the dancers of the Dance Theatre of Santa Fe," Haynes said. "The dancers bring out the joy of dancing and acting in this memorable ballet geared toward young people's imaginations."

Children from Alachua County elementary schools will attend a morning production staged exclusively for them and will receive educational materials about music, dance and the history of ballet. "We are happy to provide this opportunity for young people from our area's schools," said SF Professor of Dance Tari Kendall. "Many children have discovered their interest in the arts through this ballet."

"Peter and the Wolf" is sponsored in part by SF College and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture and Visit Gainesville, a Tourist Development Tax Grant from the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners in conjunction with the Alachua County Tourist Development Council.
