Saints pick up big win at home against ASA College Miami

November 16, 2015

The Santa Fe Saints men's basketball team went to a seldom used strategy on Saturday afternoon, pulling out a zone defense against the undersized, but accomplished outside shooting of ASA College Miami, showing the versatility of Coach Chris Mowry and the Saints in a 69-60 win.

"We've probably only played zone about 5-10 possessions all season before tonight's game," said Mowry. "But we felt it gave us the best opportunity against a team that typically runs four guard, and who's 6'7" post an step out and knock down 3's. Our guys did a nice job closing out and contesting."
ASA started the game strong, leading 10-3 just minutes into the game, but the Saints quickly flipped the script and outscored the Silver Storm 17-1 over the next 11 minutes to lead 20-11 with just under six minutes to play in the first half. SF held their lead and took a 30-23 advantage into the locker room.

The Saints (4-2) started the second half on a 17-6 run and built their lead to a game high 18 with 13:48 remaining.

The Silver Storm couldn't get a rally going over the final 10 minutes, and got it only as close as nine, which was the final margin.

Twelve players saw action for Santa Fe, and 11 scored. LaBrian Shiflet led SF with 13 points, Alex Brown had 12, and Leo Edwards had 10 to round out the double-digit scorers.

ASA committed 30 personal fouls, and sent the Saints to the foul line 45 times. The Silver Storm shot just 31% against the Saints zone, and 17.4% from behind the arc.

The Saints will continue their five-game home stand when they host Tallahassee CC on Tuesday, November 17 at 7:30 p.m.
