Juan Rollan, a Jacksonville based saxophonist, is a premier musician in the southeastern jazz circuit. In his professional career, Juan has had the privilege to perform with such legendary artists as soul great Al Green, Diane Schuur, Bernadette Peters, Ellis Hall and Jimmy Cobb (Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue"). Additionally, he has worked with a wide variety of pop, R&B, classical and jazz artists such as Ben Folds, Arturo Sandoval, Kevin Mahogany, Joe Lovano, Maria Schneider, Bob Mintzer, Kevin Bales, Marcus Printup, the Norl Friedline Quintet, the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra.
"John Coltrane is one of the musical giants of the last century," Rollan said. "His saxophone playing and many of the haunting melodies he composed were tremendous reflections of the anguish, joy, and melancholy he experienced in his life. His passion and soulfulness can not be overstated. He has left an indelible mark on music all over the world. This performance is a humble offering of gratitude to one of the greatest influences in my musical life."
"A Love Supreme" is considered one of the greatest jazz albums and compositions of all time. A sublime four-part suite that is as much a spiritual exploration as a musical masterpiece, "A Love Supreme" is perhaps one of the most influential and innovative works to emerge from the 1960s jazz scene. John Coltrane only performed it live on one occasion, on July 26, 1965. On September 23rd, 2015, Santa Fe College is excited to showcase a rare and special live performance and interpretation of "A Love Supreme" on what would be John Coltrane's 89th Birthday. Joining Juan Rollan will be Erik Lofgren on piano, Mike Perez on bass, and Stefan Kline on drums.
The performance is free and open to the public. Please contact the Santa Fe College box office at 352-395-4181 for ticket information.
