Local Historian Lectures on the History of Gainesville at Blount Center

The first lecture will cover the founding of Gainesville in 1853 and its first 50
years. Among the topics covered will be the role of Gainesville in the Civil War,
Reconstruction, the arrival of the East Florida Seminary, the building of the new
courthouse and the impact yellow fever had on the town. A slideshow will illustrate
the significant buildings and events.

The second lecture will focus on life in Gainesville from 1903 and the next fifty
years. Among the topics covered will be the arrival of the University of Florida,
the building of the Masonic Temple and the Federal Building, now known as the Hippodrome,
and the growth of downtown. We will also discuss Gainesville High School and Lincoln
High in the 1920s, the land boom, and the impact of the Depression and World War II.
