Dance Department faculty members have selected the student-choreographed dances to be performed in "Room to Dance" at 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday, May 30-31, in the Fine Arts Hall at the Northwest Campus of Santa Fe College, 3000 NW 83 Street, Gainesville.

Tickets are:  $15 orchestra; $12 balcony; $9 for University of Florida students, seniors, and children 12 and under; and free to Santa Fe College students and employees. For ticket information, call the Box Office at 352-395-4181 or visit the Fine Arts ticket website at:

"Room to Dance" is a student production from start to finish. The heart of the program is the students' choreography. A few of the dances that have been chosen are:

  • "Cell Block Tango," choreographed by Isabel Teller and inspired by Bob Fosse and his style of jazz.
  • "¡Mambo Lupita!" by Sara Lopez, who wanted the dancers to "enjoy mambo like I do."
  • "Desolate" by Gabby Gonzalez, who used a contemporary dance style to interpret a theme of not belonging.
  • "As I Am" by Olivia McCoy, a piece that allows a peek inside the creative process with room for different interpretations.
  • "Just Funkin' Rage" by Jerel Hercules, a fusion that includes West African, hip hop, ballet and modern/contemporary movements.
  • "We Rise" by Tori Haigh and Isabel Teller, a meditation on women's history from the oppression of the housewife to the empowerment of women's strength in the 1940s.

"When students are prepared and have a vision, they get it done," explained Harkness-Sebastian. "In the end, it's not about the performance as much as it is about learning from the process of creating a dance and pulling the production together."
