Gainesville, FL – Payson Smith led a powerful offensive attack on Friday afternoon against Pasco Hernando State College, going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and a RBI to pace the Santa Fe Saints past the Conquistadors 10-5.
SF (8-7) pulled out the victory despite some very sloppy defense that resulted in six errors. Just two of the Pasco runs were earned by Santa Fe pitchers. LHP Kevin Martin started and tossed three scheduled innings to earn the win. He allowed no runs and struck out three. RHP Brady Price pitched 2.2 innings and RHP Jimmy Moore finished off the game with 3.1 innings.
The Saints opened the scoring in the second with two runs, and added three more in the fourth to make it 5-0. Pasco closed the gap to 5-3 after the top of the sixth and SF answered with three of their own in the bottom of the sixth to pull away. They added two insurance runs in the seventh.
Leadoff man Casey Scoggins finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBI, and Evan Barnes drove in two runs for the Saints.
Santa Fe continues their home stand on Saturday, March 1 when Southeastern University JV makes the trip to Gainesville for a double header scheduled to begin at 12 noon.
