February 24, 2014
This article is part of an ongoing series showcasing the accomplishments of SF faculty and staff.
Aminah Nichols, Program Specialist for the My Brother's Keeper (MBK) Program, has been at Santa Fe College since 2009 and has thrived over the past year, implementing innovative ideas to help the black male population here at SF flourish.
Black men face unique challenges as they pursue academic, career and social success. MBK provides a variety of academic support and personal enrichment activities, designed to enhance the personal and academic growth of students.
Aminah has led the program in receiving the New Ideas Count Award for 2013. The award was received in response to the Student for a Day Initiative, in which black male seniors were invited to SF and paired up with a current student to participate as a college student for a day.
Additionally, Aminah helped organize the first Black Male Recruitment Conference at Santa Fe College. Over 200 black male students and their parents attended the conference and received information on the steps to applying to college. Both the Student for a Day initiative as well as the Black Male Recruitment Conference won MBK the Exemplary Practice Award for the Association of Florida Colleges (AFC) in 2013.
