Baseball Falls to St. Pete 14-8; Battle South Florida State on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Noon
February 7, 2014
The Santa Fe Saints and St. Petersburg Titans battled through misting rain and cold temperatures on Friday afternoon in Clearwater as SPC came out ahead of the sloppy game 13-8.
The Saints (2-2) committed six errors, walked five batters and hit three more.
"We just didn't play well at all," said SF Coach Johnny Wiggs. "We gave them way too many chances to score with errors, walks and hit by pitch. It's tough to win against a good team when you provide them with so many base runners. Hopefully we use this as a learning experience early in the season and work on getting better."
SF fell behind early and trailed 4-0 after the first inning. The Saints pulled back in it on the strength of homeruns by first baseman Colby Lusignan and short stop George Ragsdale, cutting the margin in half.
St. Pete tacked on one run in the fourth, in the fifth, and one in the sixth to go ahead 10-3. Santa Fe answered with five in the eighth, highlighted by a two run single from Evan Barnes.
The Titans stopped the rally short with four runs in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin.
Lusignan led the SF offense, going 2-for-4 with a homerun and two RBI.
The Saints will host South Florida State College in a double header on Saturday, Feb. 8 at noon.
