SF MEN'S BASKETBALL

Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints avoided the upset against Pasco-Hernando CC on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Conquistadors 69-66 in a non-conference matchup at the SF Gym.

"I'm happy we came away with the win, but I'm disappointed in the lack of intensity we showed," said SF Coach Chris Mowry.  "Pasco deserves a lot of credit for their game plan and the way they played tonight."

PHCC played like they had nothing to lose in the first half and led by as many as eight over the sluggish Saints.  Santa Fe righted the ship and fought back over the final eight minutes and took a 27-25 lead into the locker room.

"We really struggled to shoot and didn't finish around the rim," said Mowry.  "Defensively we gave them too many offensive rebounds and allowed too many wide open looks."

Santa Fe (17-7, 1-3 MFC) started the second half with more energy and built up a game high 57-43 lead with six minutes to go.  The Conquistadors refused to give in and slowly cut into the lead, getting to within two with just seconds remaining.

PHCC fouled Shea Jones on the ensuing possession and he knocked down one of two to make it a three point contest.  Pasco had one last chance to tie the score but Santa Fe's Reggie Hart came up with the play of the game when he blocked the final three point attempt to secure the SF win.

Morris Marshall led Santa Fe with 16 points off the bench, Shea Jones had 13, and Jon Hood chipped in 12.  PHCC's Brandon McWhorters led all scorers with 23.

The Saints next contest is at home on February 8 against Florida State College-Jacksonville at 4:00 PM.  The game will be live on www.ihigh.com/santafesaints
