Gainesville, FL – Georgia Highlands College played like a veteran team despite being in their first year of existence, taking one of two against the Santa Fe Saints on Monday afternoon in Gainesville.  The FCSAA #4 Saints (3-1) bounced back from a game one 2-1 defeat to win convincingly 9-1 in the second half of the double header, stopping it short after just five innings due to the mercy rule.

Megan McDonald drove in the Saints lone run in the third inning to cut the Chargers lead in half, but the rally was stopped their as GHC held on for the 2-1 win.

Alexis Branch finished game one 2-for-2 and McDonald was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Maddy Peres started in the circle and took the loss, surrendering two runs in 1.1 innings of work.  Ashley Chapman was stellar out of the bullpen, shutting out the Chargers for 5.2 innings to go with five strikeouts.

Game two was more what SF Coach Chris Ahern expected out of her squad as the Saints cruised to a 9-1 win in five innings.

Santa Fe jumped out early and piled four runs on in the bottom of the first on the strength of RBI by Celeste Bradshaw, Torri Bethel, Alexis Camelo, and Yanira Sanchez.

Beri Scott put an exclamation point on the game in the third inning with a three run homer, the first of her collegiate career.  Caroline Wittington knocked in a run earlier in the inning and at the end of the third SF led 8-1.

Needing one run in the fifth to force a mercy rule, Alexis Branch singled home Ariel Stephens for the decisive run and a 9-1 win for SF.

Scott finished the game 2-for-2 with a homerun and three RBI, and Branch was 2-for-3 with a RBI.  Ashley Rey started in the circle and picked up the win with three innings of work.  Amber Maxey pitched the final two innings and struck out two.

The Saints will take a few days off before welcoming the State College of Florida to Gainesville for a double header on Saturday, February 8 at 1:00 PM.
