Gainesville, FL – The College of Central Florida pulled out another close game against the Santa Fe Saints on Saturday afternoon, this time by just two points, 60-58. This is the second win for the Patriots (20-5, 3-1 MFC) against SF this season. The first was also in Gainesville on January 25, 62-55.
The Saints (16-7, 1-3 MFC) were in control well in to the second half, but the offense never got going against the athletic zone defense of CF. SF made just five field goals in the second period and scored only one point over the final four minutes as they watched their seven point lead evaporate.
CF's Rasham Suarez made the comeback complete, making two free throws with 27 seconds left to give the Patriot a one point lead. The Saints turned the ball over with 6.5 seconds remaining and Suarez added one of two free throws for the two point advantage.
Facing a two point deficit with 5.4 seconds, Jon Hood took the inbounds pass the length of the court and passed off to an open Shea Jones who just missed on a good look from the three point line as time expired.
"I feel like we played very well, but we just didn't do enough at the end to get the win," said SF Coach Chris Mowry. "Central Florida is a very talented team. We have to learn how to win games like that.
CF outrebounded the Saints 42-28 and shot 56% in the second half compared to just 23% for Santa Fe.
Shea Jones led Santa Fe with 11 points and Jon Hood and Morris Marshall had 10 each.
The Saints will play a nonconference game on Tuesday, February 4 against Pasco Hernando CC at 7:00 PM. The next conference game is at home on February 8 against FSC-J at 4:00 PM. That game will be live on www.ihigh.com/santafesaints
