Pensacola, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (40-16) fell behind for the third game in a row at the FCSAA Tournament and for the third time rallied for the win. The 3-1 victory puts SF one win away from clinching a spot in the NJCAA National Tournament in St. George, Utah.
Miami Dade put a run on the board in the first inning and held the lead until Geena Capitini tied the score with a homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning, Santa Fe's fifth homerun of the tournament.
SF starting pitcher Karla Claudio settled in after the first inning and held the Sharks at bay, scattering four hits over the final six innings.
In the bottom of the fifth Rachel Hoeft completed the SF comeback, singling down the right field line with the bases loaded, plating two Saint runs, putting SF up 3-1.
MDC threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases, but Claudio pitched out of the jam, forcing a groundout to shortstop Galis Lozada to end the game.
Hoeft finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBI and Capitini was 1-for-3 with a homer.
The Saints will face a team to be determined on Sunday, May 5 at 10:00 AM CST. A win would clinch the Atlantic District championship and a spot in the NJCAA National Tournament. Should SF lose the first game tomorrow, the team they face would have to beat them again to win the title.
The winner of tomorrows Atlantic District championship faces the Gulf District champion for the FCSAA State Championship. Both teams will represent the state of Florida in St. George, Utah at the National Tournament.
