SF FASTPITCH
Gainesville, FL – The FCSAA #5 Santa Fe Saints (38-16) started slowly on Friday afternoon against Daytona State College in round one of the FCSAA Tournament, but rallied to pick up a 6-4 win thanks to a grand slam from Rachel Hoeft, her second homerun of the season. The win was the fifth this season for SF against DSC in as many games.
The Falcons started hot, scoring two runs off Saints starter Amber Maxey, one of which came as the result of an error.
Santa Fe cut the lead in half in the third, scoring one run on a single by Sid Masso. The ball slipped through the legs of the left fielder, allowing Karla Claudio to score all the way from first.
In the bottom of the fourth the Saints loaded the bases and Sid Masso stayed patient at the plate, drawing a walk to tie the score 2-2. Rachel Hoeft stepped to the plate next and in a steady rain, belted the second pitch she saw over the left field fence to give SF a commanding 6-2 lead.
DSC threatened in the top of the seventh, scoring two to cut the margin to 6-4. Claudio clamped down in the circle and forced a groundout for the final out of the game.
Hoeft finished the game 2-for-4 with a grand slam (2) and four RBI, Claudio was 1-for-2 with two runs and two intentional walks, and Sid Masso was 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run. Claudio picked up the win with 6.2 innings of relief.
