Leesburg, FL – Santa Fe and Lake Sumter State College met for the fourth time this season on Wednesday afternoon in Leesburg and the Lakers (26-16-1, 12-8 MFC) escaped with a victory, keeping their State Tournament hopes very much alive and severely damaging the Saints (25-16, 10-10 MFC) chances at the post season. The top two teams from the MFC qualify for the FCSAA State Tournament.  MFC Standings

Jonathan Camp put the Saints on the board first, singling in Casey Scoggins in the first inning.  Lake Sumter evened the score in the bottom of the first, plating a run off SF starting pitcher Luke Helms.

The Lakers took the lead in the second with one run and added three more in the fourth.  Santa Fe's Connor Castellano made it a one run game with a three run home run in the top of the fifth.  The rally would end their however as the Lakers clamped down and held SF scoreless the rest of the way to secure the one run victory.

Santa Fe starter Luke Helms lasted just 1.1 innings before giving way to JT Simpson who pitched the final 6.2 innings.

Castellano finished the game 1-for-5 with a home run and three RBI, Evan Leyva was 2-for-3, Casey Scoggins 2-for-5, and Jarred Mederos 2-for-5.

The Saints next game is at home against Daytona State College on Friday, April 19 at 3:00 PM.
